Role of Agni Siddhānta in Digestive Health and Metabolic Disorders
Nadeesha Gunathilaka
Agni Siddhānta (the doctrine of digestive fire) holds a central position in Ayurvedic physiology and pathology. It governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, and transformation of food into bodily tissues (Dhātus). Impaired Agni is a root cause for many diseases, particularly those related to metabolism and digestion. This paper explores the philosophical foundations of Agni, its classification, physiological role, and its clinical relevance in managing metabolic disorders such as Āma formation, Grahaṇī, Prameha, and Sthaulya. Additionally, parallels with modern gastrointestinal and metabolic sciences are drawn, highlighting the integrative potential of Agni Siddhānta in contemporary health care.
